How it works

Thunderbolt is a controller chip plus a certified protocol, not a plug shape. The host laptop needs a Thunderbolt controller. A real Thunderbolt dock has its own controller. The cable in between has to pass Intel's program. Together they tunnel PCI Express, DisplayPort, USB, and power over one USB-C connector at a guaranteed floor, not a marketing maximum.

USB-C is only the connector. USB4 is the USB-IF spec that borrowed Thunderbolt 3's plumbing and then made most of the hard parts optional. Thunderbolt 4 is USB4 with the optional bits nailed down: 40Gbps, 32Gbps of PCIe, two 4K displays or one 8K, Intel VT-d DMA protection, and wake-from-sleep through a dock. Thunderbolt 3 is the 40Gbps generation that first used USB-C, with a lower PCIe floor (16Gbps) and weaker display minimums. Thunderbolt 5 doubles the floor to 80Gbps and can boost toward video at 120Gbps.

A cheap USB-C dock is usually a USB hub plus DisplayPort Alt Mode. It has no Thunderbolt controller, so it cannot promise 40Gbps, dual 4K from one cable, or a fast PCIe enclosure. It often lights one monitor and then stalls. That is not a broken dock. It was never Thunderbolt.

When it matters

It matters the moment you want one cable to carry two serious displays, a fast NVMe enclosure, or a dock that actually charges the laptop while doing both. Look for the lightning-bolt logo on the port, the cable, and the dock. A USB-C logo alone is not enough.

Mac buyers hit this first. A base M-series Mac already has a native display limit. A plain USB-C dock will not invent a second native output. If you need two independent externals on that machine, that is a DisplayLink problem, not a port-count problem. Windows laptops with a USB4 port and no Thunderbolt mark can be 20Gbps and one display. Same plug, different circuit.

Charging is a separate handshake. A Thunderbolt 4 dock such as the TS4 is specced for 98W to the host. That is USB-PD riding on the same cable, not a substitute for a certified Thunderbolt link.

These two are live catalog items already used on the site. One is a certified Thunderbolt 4 dock. The other is the certified cable most stock 0.8m leads cannot replace.

The CalDigit TS4 is the 18-port Thunderbolt 4 dock: 40Gbps host link, 98W charging, 2.5GbE, and dual 6K at 60Hz (or one 8K at 30Hz) over the included 0.8m certified cable. About $380 as of this writing. The usual buyer complaint is the price, plus DisplayPort-only video (HDMI monitors need an adapter) and the short stock cable.

The Cable Matters Intel-certified active Thunderbolt 4 cable is the 6.6 ft (2 m) active cord that holds 40Gbps. The current listing advertises 240W PD 3.1. About $65 as of this writing. It will not turn a USB-C-only port into Thunderbolt. That is the most common return reason.
