How it works
NVMe is the protocol that lets a flash drive talk over PCIe instead of the old SATA/AHCI path. Non-Volatile Memory Express maps queues and commands straight onto PCIe lanes so NAND can issue thousands of parallel requests. A common M.2 2280 stick is usually Gen3 x4 (~3,500 MB/s), Gen4 x4 (~7,000 MB/s), or Gen5 x4 (~12,000–14,000 MB/s). The same flash cells in a SATA SSD still top out near 550 MB/s because SATA III and AHCI were built for spinning disks.
Form factor and protocol are different labels. M.2 is the physical slot and card shape. PCIe is the bus. NVMe is the command set. An M.2 drive can still be a slow SATA SSD if the listing only says M.2 and never says NVMe. When it matters
It matters whenever large sequential copies or lots of small random I/O are waiting on the drive, and when you are choosing between “M.2” SKUs that are not all the same. Moving an OS from a hard drive or a saturated SATA SSD onto NVMe cuts boot and app-load waits. Video editors, game install folders, and VM images feel the sequential ceiling. Everyday browsing on an already-fast SATA SSD is a smaller jump.
Shopping traps: “M.2 SSD” without NVMe or PCIe gen, motherboard slots that are SATA-only or share lanes with a GPU/SATA port, and Gen5 drives that need cooling you did not plan for. Match the drive’s PCIe generation to the slot (a Gen4 drive still runs in a Gen3 slot at Gen3 speed). For a spare stick you want to use on the desk, pick an enclosure whose host link matches the port — 10Gbps USB-C versus USB4 / Thunderbolt.
