How it works
USB-C is the plug. USB 3.2 is the SuperSpeed data spec that can run through it (and through USB-A). The USB Implementers Forum folded the old USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 names into USB 3.2, then kept three generations on the box. That is why a 2014 laptop, a 2019 hub, and a 2026 enclosure can all say "USB 3" and still mean three different speeds.
The decoder is the generation, not the marketing line:
- USB 3.2 Gen 1 is 5 Gbps. Same ceiling as USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1. A lot of cheap USB-C hubs still live here even when the box says SuperSpeed.
- USB 3.2 Gen 2 is 10 Gbps, one SuperSpeed lane. This is the useful jump for a pocket SSD or a 10 Gbps hub.
- USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is 20 Gbps over two lanes. Rare on hosts, and it still is not USB4.
USB4 and Thunderbolt start at 20 Gbps and tunnel PCIe plus DisplayPort. USB 3.2 does not. A USB 3.2 Gen 2 hub will not turn a USB-C port into USB4. Power is a separate handshake: watts still come from USB-PD. High-current or high-data USB-C cables include an e-Marker so the port can advertise more than the USB 2.0 / 3A default.
When it matters
It matters when the listing speed and the port speed have to match, because the slowest of host, cable, and device wins. A 10 Gbps enclosure on a 5 Gbps hub port is a 5 Gbps enclosure. A 100W charge-only cord can feed a laptop and still starve the SuperSpeed lanes. Shop the Gbps figure, not the word "USB-C."
A typical USB-C hub is USB 3.2 plus DisplayPort Alt Mode. That is the right tool for extra USB ports, an HDMI monitor, and an SD card. It is not a dock with a USB4 router.
