How it works
MST is DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport: one DisplayPort output feeding more than one monitor through a hub or a daisy-chain, sharing that source's DP bandwidth. The GPU (or dock) packs several independent video streams onto a single DP link. An MST hub unpacks them onto separate DP jacks. Daisy-chain monitors that speak MST can do the same job without a separate hub, as long as every panel in the chain supports it.
A useful picture: MST is a power strip for video. One DP wall jack. Several monitors plugged in. The amperage (bandwidth) is still the one cable's ceiling. Dual 4K60 at 60 Hz eats more of that budget than dual 1080p. DP 1.2 and DP 1.4 both do MST; newer hosts with DSC stretch the same link further.
That is the opposite of a dual-4K Thunderbolt or USB4 dock. Those docks open separate DisplayPort tunnels (or dedicated lanes) inside the Thunderbolt/USB4 fabric, so each monitor is not fighting for one classic DP MST pool the same way. An MST hub on a single full-size DP or Mini DP jack is splitting one DP stream. A CalDigit-class Thunderbolt 4 dock lighting two high-res panels is using the dock's internal routing, not a cheap MST splitter on one GPU DP port.
MST is a DisplayPort feature. It is not Alt Mode (USB-C pin remap), and it is not DisplayLink (compressed frames over USB data). macOS historically does not expose DP MST the way Windows and Linux do, so an MST hub that works on a Windows GPU often stays single-monitor on a Mac.
When it matters
It matters when the GPU or laptop has one free DisplayPort (or Mini DP) and you want two or three extended desktops without buying another GPU output or a full Thunderbolt dock. Shop host MST support, DP version, and the resolution×Hz sum. Triple 4K60 needs DP 1.4 plus DSC on a capable GPU. Dual 1440p 144 Hz is a tighter fit than dual 1080p 60 Hz. A passive DP "splitter" that clones one image is not MST.
Pick an MST hub when the host already has a DP jack and Windows (or Linux) is the daily driver. Pick a Thunderbolt / USB4 dual-4K dock when you also need charging, Ethernet, and downstream TB ports, or when the host only exposes video over Thunderbolt/USB4.
