How it works

Cat6 (Category 6) is a twisted-pair Ethernet cable standard rated to 250 MHz. In practice that means Gigabit Ethernet (1 GbE) out to the full 100 m channel length most homes and offices use, plus 10 Gigabit Ethernet on shorter runs—typically up to about 55 m when the rest of the channel (patch panels, jacks, and NIC) also supports it. The RJ45 plug looks the same as Cat5e; the difference is tighter pair twist, better NEXT (crosstalk) performance, and a higher frequency budget.

A useful picture: Cat5e is a two-lane local road that still gets you to gigabit. Cat6 is the same road with a higher speed limit and cleaner markings—same destinations (routers, switches, NAS, PCs), more headroom when you push past 1 GbE or run noisier bundles. Cat6a goes further still (500 MHz, 10 GbE to 100 m). Cat6 is the sweet spot for most desk and closet drops today: cheap, widely stocked, and backwards-compatible with every Cat5e port.

Patch cables (stranded, flexible) and solid in-wall / bulk cable are both sold as Cat6. For a desk run, buy a snagless patch cord. For walls and ceilings, use solid CM/CMR-rated cable plus keystones or a patch panel, then short patch cords at each end.

When it matters

It matters when you are wiring a desk, media closet, or NAS link and want gigabit that stays solid—and a path to 10 GbE on short runs without buying Cat6a for every drop. Prefer Cat6 over unlabeled “ethernet” cable when the run is longer than a few feet, shares a bundle with other data cables, or will outlive the current 1 GbE switch. Stick with Cat5e only if you already have a working short patch and you are not planning multi-gig anytime soon. Move to Cat6a when you need certified 10 GbE across a full 100 m channel (office floors, long backbone between closets).
