CMR means conventional magnetic recording. Every data track on the platter sits in its own lane with a gap to the next one, so the drive can write any track without rewriting its neighbors. The picture from the live explainer still holds: a normal roof, each shingle in its own row. That is slower to pack than overlapping SMR tracks, and it is why a CMR drive does not fall off a write cliff mid-backup.
How it works
Writes stay local. From the SMR vs CMR guide: "That's CMR, conventional magnetic recording. Every data track on the platter has its own lane, so the drive can write to any track without disturbing its neighbors." There is no overlapping neighborhood to reshuffle, so a long backup stays near the drive's rated sequential speed instead of collapsing after the cache fills.
You pay for that with a bit less capacity per platter, which is why budget portable drives quietly moved to SMR. NAS lines that still print CMR on the spec sheet are being explicit on purpose.
When it matters
Buy CMR for NAS, RAID, Time Machine-style continuous backup, and any disk you expect to fill past about 80 percent. If the job is a one-time archive you will mostly read, SMR can be tolerated. If the job is a four-bay Synology rebuild, CMR is the requirement, not a preference.
Confirm the model number. "WD Red" without Plus was the infamous unlabeled SMR line. Red Plus, IronWolf, and Toshiba N300 print CMR.
