SMR means shingled magnetic recording. The drive writes each new data track partly on top of the one before it so more bits fit on the same platter. That extra capacity is cheap. The cost shows up later: a large copy starts fast, then falls off a cliff when the drive has to rewrite overlapping tracks. The everyday analogy is a roof. Shingles save material because they overlap, but you cannot swap one shingle without lifting its neighbors.
How it works
The slowdown is a cache running out, not a bad cable. SMR hides the shuffle behind a small conventional cache. The first several gigabytes can look as fast as a normal drive. Then the cache fills. From the live explainer: "SMR overlaps the shingles, laying each new track partly on top of the one before it, like actual roof shingles." Updating one track means rewriting the overlapping neighborhood, which is why a backup that started at 150 MB/s can limp along at 20 to 30 MB/s an hour later.
The box rarely says SMR. Budget 2.5-inch portable externals often ship this way by default.
When it matters
It matters for NAS, RAID, and any job that writes large files for hours. Random extra writes (RAID rebuilds, continuous backup, a disk that stays more than about 80 percent full) punish SMR. A drive you fill once and then mostly read is more forgiving.
There is no SMR-labeled SKU in this catalog to recommend, on purpose. If you need the drive not to fall off a cliff, buy CMR.
