How it works

Cat6a (Category 6 Augmented) is a twisted-pair copper Ethernet cable class rated for about 500 to 550 MHz of channel bandwidth and for 10GBASE-T (10 gigabit Ethernet over RJ45) out to the full 100 m channel length. It keeps the familiar eight-conductor RJ45 connector family, but the construction is stricter than everyday Cat6: thicker jackets or separators, tighter pair twist control, and specs aimed at alien crosstalk (noise from neighboring cables in a bundle). Many Cat6a patch and bulk runs also ship as shielded S/FTP (braid plus foil around the pairs) so the cable shrugs off EMI in dense racks or along power runs.

Cat6 is still fine for gigabit and for short, clean 10G patches. The usual limit is length and noise: Cat6 10GBASE-T is often quoted only to about 55 m in a well-behaved channel, while Cat6a is the class written for 10G to 100 m. 10GbE needs matching NIC and switch ports either way; the cable only carries what the PHYs negotiate. 2.5GbE desks often reuse Cat5e or Cat6, so Cat6a is the upgrade you pull when the closet will host real 10GBASE-T copper, not when you only need multi-gig to the desk.

When it matters

It matters when you are terminating new copper for 10GBASE-T, running long horizontal cables, or bundling many links in a rack where alien crosstalk shows up. Pull Cat6a for closet-to-closet or closet-to-far-room 10G runs, for patch panels that will stay in place for years, and when the path shares conduit with noisy neighbors. Keep cheaper Cat6 multipacks for short desk jumps, Pi or camera drops, and anything that will never see 10G.

Shopping traps: buying "Cat6a" patch that is actually thin Cat6 with marketing print, mixing unshielded and shielded without bonding the drain correctly, assuming a Cat6a cable creates a 10G port (it does not), and linking a non-live ethernet roundup that is still a draft. Match category print on the jacket, length you actually need, and whether the far end is a multi-gig or true 10GBASE-T switch.
