How it works
An ADC (analog-to-digital converter) measures an analog voltage—mic, instrument, or line—and turns it into a stream of digital samples at a chosen sample rate and bit depth. In a home studio that chip usually lives inside a USB audio interface: the mic preamp (and optional phantom power) raises the signal, then the ADC clocks it into numbers the computer stores. Playback goes the other way through a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) so speakers and headphones hear sound again.
Common recording rates are 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz at 24-bit. Higher rates exist; clean gain and a quiet room usually matter more than chasing the highest number on the box. USB condenser mics that plug straight into a computer still contain an ADC—they just hide it inside the mic instead of a separate interface.
When it matters
It matters whenever you want an XLR or line source in a DAW, podcast app, or call stack that only speaks digital. No ADC path means the computer never sees the mic. Prefer a dedicated interface with clear preamps and metering when vocals, guitar, or a mixer feed need reliable conversion. A USB-only desk mic is enough when you never leave that single-mic USB path.
