How it works

Phantom power is a small DC voltage—usually +48V—sent from a preamp or audio interface over a balanced XLR cable so a condenser microphone can run without its own battery. The voltage rides on the same pins that carry the audio signal (pins 2 and 3 relative to pin 1 ground), which is why it is called “phantom”: the mic sees power, and a correctly wired dynamic mic usually ignores it.

Condenser capsules need that bias to charge the diaphragm and run the internal impedance converter. Dynamic mics (moving-coil or ribbon, with caveats for some ribbons) generate their own signal from the diaphragm’s motion and normally do not need phantom. USB condenser mics that plug straight into a computer bring their own power over USB, so they are a different path from classic XLR condensers.

On most interfaces the control is a labeled 48V button or switch per mic pre (or shared across a pair). Flip it on after the XLR condenser is connected; leave it off for dynamics unless a specific mic’s manual says otherwise. Standalone “phantom boxes” exist for mixers that lack a 48V switch, but a modern USB audio interface with a mic pre is the common home-studio answer.

When it matters

It matters the moment you buy an XLR condenser and plug it into a preamp that does not already send 48V. No phantom usually means silence or a dead-quiet, uselessly weak signal—not a slightly dull recording. Prefer an interface with clear 48V switching when vocals, acoustic guitar, or overheads are on an XLR condenser. Skip phantom (and often skip condensers entirely) when the workflow is USB-only streaming mics, or when the mic is a dynamic like many podcast and live handhelds.
