How it works

VESA (technically FDMI, Flat Display Mounting Interface) is a four-hole screw pattern on the back of a display that matches a matching plate on a desk arm or wall mount. The numbers you see on the box, like 75x75 or 100x100, are the horizontal and vertical spacing between hole centers in millimeters. Most consumer monitors in the 24 to 32 inch range use 100x100; smaller panels often use 75x75; many arms advertise both.

You remove the stock stand (or leave it if the stand does not block the plate), line the arm plate up with those four holes, and fasten with the included M4 or M6 screws at the depth the mount specifies. The pattern does not carry power or video; cables still run separately. Weight capacity is a separate rating on the arm, so a VESA-compatible ultrawide still needs an arm rated for that panel mass.

Think of it as a universal bolt pattern, the same idea as a camera tripod screw, but sized for displays.

When it matters

It matters when you want a desk arm, wall mount, or pole mount instead of the stock stand, and almost every modern monitor ships with at least one VESA pattern. Check the monitor manual for the pattern and screw length before buying an arm. Skip the hunt if the display is permanently bonded to a non-removable stand or uses a proprietary plate with no VESA adapter.
