How it works

UVC is the USB device class for video: Windows, macOS, and Linux ship class drivers so a compliant camera or capture stick registers as a standard webcam. Apps that already speak the OS camera API (Zoom, Teams, Meet, OBS, FaceTime) can open that device without installing Elgato, Logitech, or Anker software first. HDMI capture sticks such as the Elgato Cam Link 4K sit on that path: clean HDMI in, UVC camera out over USB 3.0. Native USB webcams (Anker PowerConf C200, Logitech C920x) are usually UVC too, so the same camera picker lists them beside the capture stick.

The pipeline for a mirrorless or DSLR desk is simple: camera clean HDMI output to the capture card, capture card to a USB 3.0 port, then pick the device in the call or OBS sources list. Proprietary vendor apps still matter for extras (FOV presets, manual exposure, firmware, multi-device mixers), but basic 1080p60 webcam use should not depend on them. USB bandwidth is the common failure mode: a USB 2.0 port, a cheap unpowered hub, or a shared bus with other high-draw devices can drop frames or refuse higher modes even when the stick is UVC-compliant.

When it matters

It matters when you want a camera or HDMI source to work in every call app without babysitting drivers. UVC is why a Cam Link often "just works" on a fresh laptop, and why swapping between a USB webcam and an HDMI capture stick feels the same in Zoom. It also explains the tradeoff: vendor software can unlock FOV, white balance locks, or clip-guard style tools, but the baseline video path should survive without that app installed.

Reach for a UVC HDMI capture stick when the camera already has clean HDMI. Reach for a native UVC USB webcam when you want one cable and no HDMI chain. Avoid assuming every USB video gadget is UVC: some game capture boxes and older proprietary cams still want their own drivers for full modes.
