How it works
When a display cable connects, the sink answers with a compact EDID table: manufacturer, preferred mode, timing list, audio flags, and sometimes HDR or deep-color hints. The GPU (or SoC display engine) reads that table over the DDC/I2C wire inside HDMI or DisplayPort, then builds the mode list you see in System Settings or the Windows display panel. No EDID usually means no modes, a stuck 800x600 fallback, or a desktop that refuses to keep a virtual screen for remote control.
A physical panel stores its own EDID in a small PROM. A headless dummy plug is just a tiny board that presents a canned EDID (often advertising 1080p60 or 4K60) so the host thinks a real monitor is attached. Software like BetterDisplay can then drive that virtual screen, rearrange spaces, or keep GPU acceleration alive when no panel is plugged in. The plug does not carry pixels to a TV; it only spoofs identity. That is a different problem from HDCP, which is a DRM handshake on protected movie streams.
EDID can also be wrong or incomplete: a cheap adapter may rewrite or drop fields, a dock may cache an old sink, or a KVM may present its own blob. Fixes are usually "unplug and re-read," update dock firmware, or use a known-good EDID emulator when you intentionally want a fixed virtual display.
When it matters
It matters for headless Mac minis, studio racks, game-stream hosts, and any PC you remote into without a monitor on the desk. If Screen Sharing, Parsec, or Steam Link drops to a tiny resolution the moment you unplug the panel, the GPU lost a trusted EDID. A 4K60 dummy on the free HDMI or DisplayPort port restores a stable mode list. Skip "EDID strippers" sold to defeat DRM; they are not the headless use case, and they do not belong in a normal affiliate kit.
