How it works

SFP+ is a standardized hot-pluggable transceiver form factor: you seat a module (or a molded DAC end) into a matching cage on a switch or NIC, and that port becomes a 10G (or related) Ethernet link. The cage follows the SFP+ MSA mechanical footprint. What you plug in decides the media: a 10GBASE-SR optic takes multimode LC fiber for short building runs; a 10GBASE-T SFP+ module exposes an RJ45 jack for Cat6a copper up to about 30 m; a Direct Attach copper twinax cable hard-wires two SFP+ cages for rack-scale jumps without separate optics.

Electrically the host talks to the module over the SFP+ connector; the module’s EEPROM advertises type, reach, and often vendor coding. Open MSA ports accept many third-party modules; some OEM switches check coding and reject unknowns. Speed must match on both ends—do not expect a 10G SFP+ optic to negotiate down cleanly into a 1G-only SFP cage unless the datasheet says so.

Think of the cage as a universal bay and the module as the “faceplate” that picks fiber, copper RJ45, or twinax.

When it matters

It matters when a switch or NIC already exposes SFP+ ports and you need 10G without rebuilding the whole copper plant—not when every host only has RJ45 and the run is already Cat6. Prefer SR optics plus multimode fiber for aisle or closet jumps past DAC reach. Prefer an SFP+ to RJ45 10GBase-T module when one side is SFP+ and the other is a multi-gig or 10G copper NIC within ~30 m on Cat6a. Prefer DAC when both cages sit a few meters apart in the same rack.
