How it works
The phone, not the brick, picks the exact voltage. A PPS charger still speaks ordinary USB-PD: it sends a capability list. Alongside the usual fixed profiles (5V, 9V, 15V, 20V) it can advertise one or more Augmented Power Data Objects (APDOs), typically a 3.3 to 11V or 3.3 to 21V window at up to 3A or 5A. The phone then requests a specific point inside that window, 20 mV at a time, and a current limit in 50 mA steps. It has to keep asking, at least every 10 seconds, or the charger drops back to a safe state.
That tiny step is the whole point. A phone battery sits around 3.7 to 4.4V. If the charger only offers 9V, the phone's charge chip has to knock 9V down to battery voltage and dump the difference as heat. PPS lets the charger sit just above the battery, so that conversion stays small. Samsung Super Fast Charging, many Pixel and Android 45W-class profiles, and similar direct-charge schemes ride this path. A MacBook asking for 20V / 5A still uses a fixed profile. PPS is not how most laptops charge.
GaN is the semiconductor inside the brick. PPS is a handshake feature. You can have a bulky silicon charger with PPS, or a tiny GaN cube with only fixed profiles. They are not the same spec.
When it matters
It matters when you want advertised phone fast-charge speeds, especially Samsung Super Fast Charging or a 45W Android profile. A charger that only lists "PD 3.0" or "100W" is not a promise of PPS. Look for PPS, an APDO range like 3.3 to 21V, or the phone maker's Super Fast Charging / PPS label.
It does not matter for a USB-C laptop that wants 65W or 100W on a fixed 20V profile. That laptop will charge the same on a PPS brick and a fixed-only brick of the same wattage. PPS also does not relax the cable rule: above 60W you still need an e-Marked 5A cord, same as the 100W cable guide.
If you only trickle-charge a phone overnight, skip the hunt. You need PPS when the phone's spec sheet mentions Super Fast Charging, PPS, or 45W USB-C.
