How it works
Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) is a UPS feature that corrects brownouts and mild overvoltage with boost and buck transformers (or similar circuitry) so output stays near nominal without dumping the load onto the battery. When wall voltage sags, boost raises it. When it swells a bit, buck lowers it. The battery stays charged for real outages instead of cycling on every brief sag. This page means Automatic Voltage Regulation for power protection, not Atmel or Microchip AVR microcontrollers.
Most home and small-office UPS units that advertise AVR are line-interactive: they pass utility power through with AVR trimming, then switch to inverter only when the input leaves the AVR window or fails outright. A standby (offline) UPS does little or no voltage correction and transfers to battery as soon as input leaves a narrow band. An online (double-conversion) UPS regenerates AC continuously from DC, so voltage is always rebuilt rather than trimmed; that topology is quieter on dirty power but costs more and runs warmer. AVR is an electrical trait. HID UPS USB status reporting is a separate protocol choice for battery %, load, and AC present.
Limits matter. Deep sags and full blackouts still force a battery transfer. AVR does not create pure sine output by itself, and it does not raise VA or watt capacity. A unit with AVR and simulated sine can still trip Active PFC PSUs; size VA/W for the load and pick pure sine when the gear needs it.
When it matters
It matters on grids with frequent brownouts, long feeder runs, or mild overvoltage where a standby UPS would chatter onto battery every afternoon. Riding those events on AVR saves battery cycles and keeps runtime available for a real cut. NAS, routers, and desktops on a home UPS benefit when the box lists AVR on the sheet and the outlets you care about are battery-backed, not surge-only.
Shopping traps: assuming every "UPS" has AVR (check the spec), treating AVR as a substitute for enough VA or pure sine, and hanging a fragile NAS on surge-only outlets while the AVR battery outlets feed a lamp. Prefer a line-interactive tower that lists AVR plus the waveform and HID USB you need, then pull the plug once in a maintenance window so logs show a clean transfer.
