A midrange tablet for streaming, class notes, and light work comes down to two names for most buyers in 2026: the Apple iPad (A16) and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE. Both are 11-inch-class aluminum slates with LCD screens, 128GB of base storage, USB-C, and keyboard cases sold separately. They split on the chip, the screen refresh rate, what comes in the box, water resistance, storage expansion, and the operating system you will live in for years. Everything below comes from Apple and Samsung spec pages, current Amazon US listings, and published benchmark results from PhoneArena, Notebookcheck, and Geekbench, summarized in our own words. This is not a lab test.

Quick verdict

Buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE if handwritten notes, PDF markup, or sketching are part of the plan, if the tablet will live near a pool, kitchen sink, or a kid with a juice box, or if you want cheap extra storage through microSD. Once a pen is counted, the price gap mostly disappears.

Buy the Apple iPad (A16) if speed matters more than the pen, you already use an iPhone or Mac, you want the widest choice of tablet-optimized apps, or you only need a media and browsing slate and want to spend the least.

Display and media

Winner: Galaxy Tab S10 FE, narrowly.

Both panels are LCD, so neither has OLED blacks. The Tab S10 FE runs up to 90Hz, which makes scrolling feeds and web pages look smoother, and Samsung rates it up to 800 nits with Vision Booster. PhoneArena measured roughly 800 nits on the Samsung against roughly 530 on the iPad, so the Tab is easier to read near a bright window. The iPad counters with a slightly sharper 264 ppi panel, True Tone, and better color accuracy in the same measurements, which helps photo browsing. Its screen is fixed at 60Hz.

For movies, the 16:10 Samsung screen fits widescreen video with smaller black bars than the iPad's taller, squarer shape, and both have stereo speakers. If the tablet is mostly for streaming in bed, the brighter, smoother Samsung screen is the better daily view.

Performance

Winner: iPad (A16), clearly.

This is the iPad's biggest advantage. In published Geekbench 6 results, the iPad (A16) scores around 2,460 to 2,570 single-core and about 5,800 multi-core, while the Tab S10 FE lands around 1,350 to 1,370 single-core and 3,870 to 3,940 multi-core. PhoneArena's 3DMark Wild Life Extreme run shows the iPad close to double the Samsung's graphics score. Notebookcheck describes the Exynos 1580 as smooth for everyday use but prone to slowdowns with video editing and large image files.

In practice, both handle streaming, browsing, notes, and office documents. The iPad has far more headroom for games, photo and video editing, and keeping more years of updates feeling quick. The Samsung's extra RAM helps with keeping several apps open, but it does not close a CPU and GPU gap this large.

The pen story and true total cost

Winner: Galaxy Tab S10 FE.

The S Pen ships in the Tab S10 FE box, needs no charging, and works with Samsung Notes features such as handwriting assist and the math solver. That is the main reason this tablet makes sense for students and note takers.

The iPad (A16) supports the Apple Pencil (USB-C) and the 1st generation Apple Pencil (with a USB-C adapter), and both cost extra. It does not support Apple Pencil 2 or Apple Pencil Pro. The USB-C Pencil has no pressure sensitivity, which matters for artists more than for note takers.

Here is the math at current Amazon US prices. The iPad (A16) at $399 plus the Apple Pencil (USB-C) at $69 comes to $468, against $549.99 for the Tab S10 FE with its pen included. At Apple's and Samsung's own list prices ($449 plus a $79 Pencil versus $549.99), the gap is about $22. If a pen is on the shopping list, the two are close to even on price, and the Samsung adds water resistance and a card slot.

Keyboards and light work

Winner: Galaxy Tab S10 FE for cost, iPad for the keyboard itself.

Apple's Magic Keyboard Folio for iPad (A16) costs $249 and includes a trackpad and a function row. Samsung's Book Cover Keyboard Slim with an AI key lists at $139.99 and often sells for less on Amazon. With a pen and keyboard, list totals land near $777 for the iPad and about $690 for the Tab S10 FE.

On software, iPadOS has the stronger catalog of tablet-optimized apps, plus the iPadOS 26 windowed multitasking and support for one external display up to 4K over USB-C. Samsung's One UI offers split screen with up to three apps and DeX mode with the keyboard case for a desktop-like layout. For email, documents, and spreadsheets both are fine; for long writing sessions, the iPad keyboard with its trackpad is the nicer tool, at a much higher price.

Storage and microSD

Winner: Galaxy Tab S10 FE.

Both start at 128GB. The Tab S10 FE adds a microSD slot that Samsung rates for cards up to 2TB, so offline movies, downloaded shows, and PDFs can live on a cheap card. The iPad has no card slot, so more space means buying the 256GB or 512GB model up front (Apple lists them at $549 and $749).

Durability and water resistance

Winner: Galaxy Tab S10 FE.

The Tab S10 FE is IP68 rated for dust and water, rated by Samsung for immersion up to about 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. Apple does not give the iPad (A16) any IP rating. For a kitchen recipe screen, a tablet that travels in a pool bag, or a family device, that rating is real peace of mind.

Battery and charging

Winner: tie, with different strengths.

Samsung quotes up to 20 hours of video playback from an 8,000 mAh battery, while Apple quotes up to 10 hours of web or video from 28.93 Wh. The two makers test differently, so treat those figures as maker claims rather than a direct comparison. The Tab S10 FE charges at up to 45W but ships with only a cable, so budget for a fast USB-C brick. The iPad tops out at 20W, and the 20W adapter is in the box. Our USB-C charger guide covers bricks that suit either tablet.

Software updates and AI features

Winner: Galaxy Tab S10 FE on written commitments.

Samsung promises seven generations of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for the Tab S10 FE, which launched on Android 15 and has already moved to Android 16. Apple does not publish a fixed support window, though base iPads have historically received major iPadOS releases for many years. One caveat on the Apple side: the A16 iPad does not support Apple Intelligence. The Tab S10 FE includes Galaxy AI features such as Circle to Search and writing tools.

Price and value

Winner: Galaxy Tab S10 FE once a pen is counted, iPad for the cheapest entry.

Both makers raised prices in 2026. The Tab S10 FE now lists at $549.99 for 128GB and $669.99 for 256GB. The iPad (A16) lists at $449, $549, and $749, but Amazon currently sells the 128GB model for $399. Without a pen, the iPad is the cheaper and faster tablet. With a pen, a microSD card, or a keyboard on the list, the Samsung gives more for the money.

Apple's successor with a newer chip is widely reported for early 2027, so buyers who are not in a hurry may want to watch for it.

Bottom line

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE is the better midrange tablet for media, notes, and light work: the pen is included, the screen is brighter and smoother, it survives a dunk, and storage expands cheaply. The Apple iPad (A16) is the pick for raw speed, the best app library, and the lowest entry price, especially if a pen is not part of the plan; pair it with the Apple Pencil (USB-C) if notes matter.
